What to eat and what not?


What’s good and what’s not. If you have high blood pressure, the first thing to do is to

  • reduce excess alcohol,
  • reduce caffeine, and
  • quit smoking,

All habits with a very adverse effect.


To help lower blood pressure you can

increase consumption of vegetables,


better if organically grown

Plant foods are rich in vitamins, fibers, minerals, and potassium:
Green leaf vegetables, rich in calcium and magnesium are especially beneficial.

Whole grains and legumes have high fiber content to lower cholesterol.

Broccoli and citrus fruit are rich in vitamin C.

Celery is high in sodium but contains a natural compound by the name of phthalide with lowering blood pressure capability.

Onion and garlic (also in the form of supplement) are very beneficial.

Flaxseed oil, nuts, walnuts,

Fish (salmon, tuna, herring and mackerel) are rich in omega 3 fatty acid.

Baked potato

  1. Take four leaves of holy basil and two leaves of margosa with two to four teaspoonfuls of water, empty stomach, for a week. This helps in reducing high blood pressure.
  2. Include amla, apple, lemon, papaya, watermelon, carrot, onion, garlic, tomato, and green vegetables in your diet. Indian gooseberry (amla) taken along with milk daily helps in lowering blood pressure.
  3. Keep fast once a week or in 15 days. This helps in normalizing the digestive system, but if you feel weak and tired, fasting should not be done.
  4. Banana, litchi, mango, orange, pomegranate, coconut, pineapple, grapes and raisins are beneficial for healthy heart but guava, jackfruit and tamarind are harmful for the heart.
  5. Take wheat and gram flour in equal quantities and eat chapatti made from this flour.
  6. Radish, drumstick, cabbage, pumpkin, carrots, tomato, bitter, gourd, spinach, cucumber, spearmint and coriander leaves are good for the heart patient.
  7. Cauliflower, brinjal, lady’s finger and mustard leaves are harmful for the heart. Mustard leaves have less fiber content and more protein, so the heart has to work more by supplying more blood to digest these leaves, putting pressure on the heart.
  8. Take isabgul in curd. You will feel satisfied after taking 1-2 teaspoons of isabgul in curd which increases the fibrous content of the diet.


  • Refrain from adding salt to homemade dishes; add herbs and spices as flavor enhancements instead.
  • Avoid cooking with bullions.
  • And finally if you eat out, talk to the waiter and request for your food to be prepared without salt. Most restaurants will accommodate your needs
  • To be avoided all foods containing saturated fats, like animal products, animal fat, and margarine.
  • Avoid also trans-fatty acid, sugar, and refined carbohydrates contained in processed foods.
